What Happens in Skateistan

Theatre workshopWhat happens when you put five Afghan girls, five Afghan boys and a handful of Australians and Germans in one room? Nuclear meltdown? Not really. We put together a workshop aimed at bringing the children together while giving them the tools they need to build community, trust and respect. First priority was making sure everyone took a vow to keep things hush-hush to create a safe and comfortable environment where ideas and thoughts could be exchanged freely—something of an anomaly in Afghanistan. Thanks to the Afghan Human Rights Development Organization (AHRDO) and their eight-day training with the girls and boys at Skateistan, the 10 students were able to play games, act and talk about the issues that affect them the most, building skills that they can use in the skatepark and on the streets.
