Awards & Skating at New Semester Celebration

On Wednesday, August 25th, Skateistan invited all students and parents to an event recognizing student excellence through an award ceremony and skateboard demos. Almost all students attended, and some brought along their mothers, fathers and siblings. Delegates from the Norwegian and German embassies also attended.

Marwa Safa, who attends Girls Classes on Tuesday afternoon, opened the ceremony with a recitation from the Holy Koran. Each instructor chose two students from each of their classes in Semester 2 to receive an award. Students were chosen based on many factors, including having a positive personality, being helpful in class, excellent artwork and being most improved in the skatepark. Students with perfect attendance over the 13-week Semester were also called up for an award and given a prize. Every student receiving an award was then included in a skateboarding demo for the audience.

While the kids got their safety gear on, a video and photo slideshow of environmental projects undertaken by all students in Semester 2 was shown. The students really enjoyed seeing what the other classes had been working on and it was a great opportunity for Skateistan to showcase not only the students' skateboarding skills but also the amazing work they've been doing in the classrooms. The Afghanistan National Olympic Committee (ANOC) was also present and gave awards to Skateistan instructors and office administration staff for their hard work throughout the semester.
